Before we start with the recipes, let’s see what foods to eat and avoid in general to keep your blood pressure within the healthy range long-term.
Foods That Can Raise Blood Pressure (avoid):
Well, according to this science review, there are certain foods that can directly increase your blood pressure and should be avoided at all costs if you have hypertension. These foods include:
- too much salt (pickled / packaged and processed foods)
- energy drinks
- liquorice and products that contain it
- alcohol
Other than that, some people might also have problems with
- caffeine like coffee and chocolate
- sugar / high-glycemic foods like sweets, baked or fried potatoes, white rice, bread etc. (source)
Whatever you do, if you have hypertension you want to stay away from takeout and packaged food that is ready to heat up and go. The biggest problem with these foods is that they’re too high in sodium and unhealthy omega-6 and transfats. Often they also have a high glycemic index or caffeine. All of these things can raise your blood pressure even if you usually don’t have hypertension. But if you do, they’re definitely something you want to stay away from.
Foods To Help Keep Your Blood Pressure Healthy
When it comes to foods that can lower your blood pressure long-term, studies have shown that there are several types of diets like the Mediterranean diet and Nordic diet that can help tremendously with hypertension.
The main goals of these diets are to lose weight (if necessary), reduce inflammation and insulin resistance. By achieving this, your blood pressure will also stabilize overtime. Many studies also suggest that vegetarian diets (source) as well as a higher protein and low-glycemic diet (source) can help as well. That means there are many ways to get to a healthy blood pressure by eating well. What all of these diets have in common are:
- whole unprocessed foods
- foods that are high in fiber and have a low or medium glycemic index like vegetables, seeds, nuts, beans, some whole grains
- are a good source of protein – lean meat, fish, tofu, beans (source)
- and healthy fats like omega-3’s (found in flaxseed, chia seeds, fish and green vegetables) and monounsaturated fats found in avocado and olive oil
